Getting Around Te Awamutu

Getting around Te Awamutu town centre

The centre of Te Awamutu is relatively small, with most key places within a short distance of the town centre. Te Awamutu is a highly-accessible town, with paved accessways suitable for wheelchairs and mobility aids. Getting around the surrounding areas is easiest by private car, but there are two taxi companies in town if needed.

Bus 

The 24 Te Awamutu service travels between Te Awamutu and Hamilton, seven days a week. 

This service offers three limited trip options:

  • To/from Kihikihi on Tuesday and Thursday. 

  • From Rukuhia School to Hamilton on weekdays.

  • A school assist service to Hamilton Boys High School and Southwell School on weekdays during term time.

Train

Connecting the Waikato and Auckland, Te Huia is capable of carrying over 500 passengers per day, transforming the journey of those travelling between Hamilton, Huntly and Auckland. This service is shaping the future of rail public transport in the Waikato and will help reduce New Zealand's carbon footprint.

Airport

By air, the closest airport is Hamilton Airport, located about 20 minutes drive from Te Awamutu. Air New Zealand, Originair and Sunair fly to cities and towns around New Zealand from Hamilton Airport each day. There are 4 direct flight routes to Wellington, Christchurch, Palmerston North and Nelson, with 139 flights a week.
