Newsletter: July 2001

Hi Everyone,

SECTAOpen Day at the Events Centre:
A steady steam of visitors showed up to inspect progress on the Trust Waikato Events Centre and swimming pool project at the open day on July 8th.
The centre is really starting to take shape and is on schedule for completion by the beginning of November.

Business Awards:
The 2001 Telecom Local Directories Business Awards Ceremony was held at the Council Chambers on July 12th. Congratulations to Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce for staging such a successful event, and to Mervyn Gyde & Associates for taking out the "Best Business of the Year" award. More...

You may have noticed that we've added some pop-up menus to our homepage (when you hold your mouse over the signs). We hope this will make it easier and quicker to find what you're looking for.

St JohnsThis Month's Featured Page: History of Old St John's Church

Jim Mandeno has kindly provided us with a one-page history of this local icon.
This is the sort of contribution which gives Te Awamutu Online it's depth and we'd be very keen to hear from anyone else who is able to provide similar material.

Tips & Tricks on the Net: JetStream

JetStream is a Telecom product which allows faster, more convenient internet access. There are numerous companies offering similar "broadband" services, but this month we're focusing on JetStream for one reason: It isn't available in Te Awamutu!

So why are we talking about it?

JetStream requires that the local telephone exchange be "ADSL-compatible", something which the Te Awamutu exchange is not. Telecom is in the process of upgrading exchanges around the country, but does not have a firm date for upgrading Te Awamutu. Telecom has indicated that they will make an effort to upgrade exchanges in areas which have shown an interest in JetStream, which brings us to the point: You can register an interest in JetStream at Telecom's website. The more people that do this, the more likely it is that JetStream (and other services which use the same technology) will become available here!

See you again next month.
