SUPREME WINNER:  Robert Harris Café Cambridge

Cambridge Town Hall was packed to the seams on Friday night (3 July) as entrants and supporters waited to hear the results of the 2009 Waipa Business Awards.  The overall winner was announced to be a local café in its first 18 months of business, Robert Harris Café Cambridge.

The sell-out event, run by the two Chambers of Commerce operating in the Waipa District, (Cambridge and Te Awamutu) with major sponsor Waipa Networks, was the culmination of the Business Excellence Awards, Customer Service Awards and Customer Choice Awards.   Over 270 entrants and supporters packed the atmospheric town hall for a dinner and dance during which all awards were announced.

This year’s Supreme Winner, Robert Harris Café Cambridge, scooped up awards for Excellence in Small Business (winner), Excellence in Tourism/Hospitality (Certificate of Commendation) and of course, the top award:  Waipa Networks Business Awards 2009 Supreme Winner.

Owners Fiona and Derek Glass collected a $1000 cheque, a night for two at the prestigious Maungatautari Lodge and the Supreme Winners trophy.

The café entered the Business Awards for the first time this year, with this effort paying off.  The judges of the Excellence in Small Business Award said:  “Although part of a franchise, the approach to ensure staff involvement and buy in to the company culture can only come from the management and the care and time they invest in their staff.  Clear that customer input is important and the mechanisms are in place to ensure that this information is gathered from a number of different sources and feature in the future plans for developing the business.”

A total of seven excellence award categories drew more entries than ever before for this year’s competition.  In addition, public votes determined the winner of the Customer Choice category in both towns (Robert Harris Café Te Awamutu and Capelli Studio, Cambridge).  A succession of mystery shopping judges over the past six months resulted in awards for Best Customer Service in retail, trade, manufacturing and professional business sectors in the district.

Cambridge and Te Awamutu Chambers congratulate all finalists and winners, and thank the Awards sponsors for their commitment.  Awards Convenor, Chris Smith said:  “Congratulations to Robert Harris Café Cambridge on their success.  The two Chambers of Commerce are very proud of this, our premier business event of the year.  It’s a great opportunity for all businesses within Waipa, no matter how large or small, to receive recognition for their achievements, and celebrate contributions that individual businesses have made to Waipa, with winners benefiting from prestige, profile and recognition.  We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!”
