Members of the small sea-side Kawhia Golf Club are cock-ahoop after scooping all three trophies up for grabs on finals day in the Waikato women’s weekday pennant.

None of the other 11 teams who qualified for the final at Cambridge stood a chance for overall pennant honours after Kawhia took out both the silver and bronze division pennants. Kawhia won the overall pennant with 288 net. They were 12 shots clear of the runners-up Hamilton, with Horsham Downs third on 303.

The coasters won the silver division with 143 net, from Horsham Downs (147) and Pio Pio/Aria (148), and the bronze division with 145 net, from Hamilton (150) and Stewart Alexander (152). Cushla Arbuckle and Mary Smith were the victorious silver pairing with 69 and 74 net respectively, and Patsy Scott (72) and Diane Scott (73) the champion bronze pairing.

It was a remarkable achievement collecting all three trophies in a competition which had 24 teams originally entered.

Only six women play golf regularly at Kawhia, with four of them making up the two teams.

“What you see is what you get,” says Patsy Scott.

Further success went Kawhia’s way with Cushla Arbuckle returning the best net of the day, a 69.

Kawhia women’s ‘day in the sun’ comes hot-on-the-heels of their male club-mates winning the Prebble Cup for the first time.

“We organised a pot luck dinner for the men (Sunday night of Queen’s Birthday weekend) after their win, now it’s up to them to do something for us,” quipped Scott.
