Pirongia volunteer firefighter Peter Neuhauser says he has lost count of the number of times he has been to crashes on the stretch of road between Pirongia and the Ngutunui turnoff.

The driver of a north bound truck and trailer that rolled on Ormsby Road near Kiwi Road on Friday afternoon escaped with minor injuries.

Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade, Pirongia Fire Force, St John Ambulance and police attended the accident. Foam was sprayed on the road by Te Awamutu Brigade because of fuel leakage.

Mr Neuhauser says Pirongia Fire Force has been to several fatal accidents and numerous injury accidents on this stretch of road in recent years.

“It is without doubt the accident blackspot area for the region we serve,” he says.

He believes emergency services will be attending plenty more accidents on this road too, unless something can be done. Excessive speed has been a major contributing factor in many of the crashes. Mr Neuhauser believes something needs to be done to ensure drivers adhere to safe speeds on this stretch of road and improvements made to road visibility and layout.

Large amounts of heavy traffic use the road, with their drivers often unfamiliar with the road.
