The mountain's original full name, "Pirongia te aroaro o Kahu", translates as "The scented pathway of Kahu" or "the sweet-smelling presence of Kahu".

The mountain is popular with trampers and hunters. A variety of moderate to difficult walks are available. The Mangakara Nature Walk is a good one to start with.
