Mount Pirongia is our local mountain, situated about 22km west of Te Awamutu and 8km from Pirongia Village. It is an extinct volcano, part of the Hakarimata Range. The mountain's original full name, "Pirongia te aroaro o Kahu", translates as "The scented pathway of Kahu" or "the sweet-smelling presence of Kahu".
The mountain is popular with trampers and hunters. A variety of moderate to difficult walks are available. The Mangakara Nature Walk is a good one to start with.
