Former Waipa Mayor John Hewitt passed away on December 30 after a short battle with lung cancer.
Mr Hewitt became the second Waipa District Mayor in 1995, storming home to win by a huge majority in the local body elections. He had been part of the amalgamated Waipa District Council since its inception in 1989. He was a member of the Cambridge Community Board for three years.
At the time he was a Te Miro drystock farmer and during the build-up to the elections spent considerable time canvassing people within the Waipa to find out their concerns. The major response was that the amalgamation wasn't a popular move. Mr Hewitt recognised Cambridge and Te Awamutu were very different towns, but felt they could coexist as part of the Waipa District and worked hard to promote that.
During his six years as Mayor he encouraged people to have input into the direction of council and he will be fondly remembered by many in the community. Mr Hewitt was farewelled at the St Andrew's Church in Cambridge last week and his ashes were spread over his Te Miro farm.
